The Girl Effect

I have been inspired by Tara Gentile from Scoutie Girl to again post.  She is encouraging us to blog about the girl effect and I want to share something my daughter and her friends did this weekend.  My daughter is twelve and along with seven of her friends that range from 8 to 14 made a rope of silly bandz to set a new world record.  They made a rope that was officially counted at 16,177 bands.  It went from one end of our local mall to the other and back.  Not only that, they incorporated it into a fundraiser for their friend who is battling leukemia for the fourth time and has just recently undergone her second bone marrow transplant.  It was awesome to see them go to the local businesses and ask for their help for their friend, as well as letting everyone know with their fliers all around our local neighborhoods.  My neighbor spearheaded the event with the girls and showed them how to use their voices as strong young women to make a difference in their community.  I can't say I would have had the courage to do something of this kind at their age, but I sure am proud of them for doing it all.  They named the event Rope For Hope  and have so far raised almost $5000 with more coming in and once I get a picture I will post it.

We have to remember that there are a lot of times our daughters are able to dream big and it is up to us to help them and guide along their own journey to be their best.

New Fest Treasury

Since I haven't thought of anything interesting recently, I have been slack and not posted.  However, I got notification that I was included in a treasury by another Etsy Fest member. Take a look and leave a comment. The link is above and mine is the santa gourd.  She did a really nice job.

What Will You Teach The Next Generation about Creativity?

Another post in one week is not usual for me.  However, I was reading Tara's blog and she posed the question about what will you teach the next generation about creativity and I felt compelled to play along.  I have two children, one fifteen-year-old son and one twelve year old daughter.  Each is creative in their own way.  My son is a perfectionist and has trouble letting go so my teaching for him has been that being perfect is not what counts.  It is the process and enjoyment of being creative that counts.  He has found ways to channel his creativity in his music  and in drawing for himself and I find that amazing.  My daughter is more artistic in everything she does and I encourage her to use it as her release and do what makes her heart sing.   I will find her working away and her sense of perspective encourages  me to be more creative so the teaching goes both ways.  I also get to work with our Girl Scout group of 8 twelve year olds and being able to see them be creative in their own ways always blows me away.  I try to encourage each of them to find what works for them and to know that it doesn't matter what they create or what the person next to them does, it is that they enjoy it and allow themselves to be unique and true to their own hearts.

As Tara asked, what will you teach the next generation about creativity?

Chocolate Overload!!!

B - Hershey Kiss ---- Bingo!
A little higher, higher ... Got it!

I can even eat the bowls???  Yum!
My daughter had twelve of her friends over for her Chocolate Birthday Party Saturday!  What was I thinking :)  That many twelve year old girls and chocolate and games makes for a lot of noise.  Thankfully, my hubby and son were elsewhere for the party.  Their ears would have needed a break by the end.  We played chocolate bingo, relay races, feeding your partner chocolate bars off of fishing pole over your head (EXTREMELY FUNNY) and then they decided it was time to run around outside and organize the obligatory dance competition.  Good call.  On top of all that we had several kinds of chocolate candy,  cookies with chocolate, tried to have a chocolate fountain but it didn't work so dipped fruit in the chocolate instead, chocolate flower cups with cake -- way too much chocolate.  I think I heard a couple of girls say they didn't want to see any more chocolate for a long time.  Of course, with Halloween around the corner that won't last.

I have my first giveaway winner - Cat from the etsy shop collagical.  Congratulations Cat!  I used random.org to generate the winner.  I will email her and she has 48 hours to respond so I can get her gourd bowl out to her so she can start enjoying it.  If I don't hear from her within that time, I will randomly pick another entry.

This week it is all about chocolate.  My daughter is having a birthday and we are having a party with a chocolate theme.  Being born right before Halloween, we have been having costume parties, but she is growing up.  This year it is all about chocolate - chocolate bingo, chocolate fountain, make your own chocolate cup dessert, chocolate drink.... and anything else we can think for a fun middle schooler party.  Who knows, I may find some creative inspiration  and come up with a new chocolate design.  Several ideas come to mind!!  Any suggestions or things you have done with chocolate in mind?

Until then, check out my Halloween items and other upcoming holiday themed items.
Boo to You!

Marching Band Props

Happy Monday Morning!  So far it has been a good one.  Last week I thought I would get to do some painting on some new items.  I got do a little, but most of the week was spent helping sort out one band fundraiser and then painting props for another band.  Thank goodness I only have two children.
Here is a picture of the boat we worked on last week for the first competition of the season. The band's theme is Pocohontas.  Of course, now the band director would like more color.  Up close you don't realize how dark the boat is, but across the field it gets lost.  I guess I'll be doing some more painting this week since Park Vista is hosting their own competition this weekend and will be using the boat again.  Lighter colors this time.  The art club  painted the teepees for the band  --

Thanks to everyone that checked out my giveaway last week.  The winner will be picked next Monday so please pass it along.

I hope you get to do something creative today!

I'm Back, I think

I have fallen way behind in posting to my blog and a lot of other areas over the summer.  Changing mediums has thrown me and having the kids around all the time for the summer made motivation even worse.  Hopefully, I will get my act together and get going.

I am working on a giveaway to start next week. Keep posted and I will set it in motion next Monday.  Until then,  I have added a few items to my Etsy site in the past few months.  When you get a chance check them out.  I have added a link to one in particular.  I had to get something up for Halloween. These cute pumpkins will be hung with black ribbon and I will update the pictures this afternoon.  I have another coming shortly, as well as Christmas items.

  Happy Halloween

After Delray Affair

The show is over and I got to go home.  Actually, it wasn't far from home, but it sure was wet Sunday.  The crowds were really big Saturday and part of Sunday until the rain and thunder showed up.  Not a bad weekend.  My tent and tent sides are all spread out so they don't mildew.   EWW!   Any new shows you have attended or shown your items in?  Post a picture or comment if you would like.  My picture is the layout we used this week for the show, mainly to keep people from using the booth as a pass through to the restaurant behind us.  It seemed to draw people in, especially those that don't like to come all the way in and would otherwise have stood in the path of the flow of people.  Now if  I could just make some money on all those people that told me how beautiful my artwork is.  I would be RICH! haha!

Times are 10-7 Friday and Saturday and 10-6 Sunday.

Time Gone By

Time has gotten away again.  I have been sitting here trying to reformulate my blog layout and I don't think I am happy with this one either.  Any suggestions?  Between working on the blog layout and the layout of my new brochure I have not even been able to do anything creative.  Ever feel that way?  I guess I just need to schedule some time to get out in my studio.  With a big craft show looming, that should motivate me.  If you have any comments, please feel free to leave one and I'll get back or maybe even post some.

Gotten Behind

You would think with a new blog that I would keep up.  I actually got a little intimidated by the whole thing, but I'm back. I know there are still some things to be done, and if you have suggestions, please feel free as I will begin making some changes.

I finished this painting recently and thought I would enter it in an art contest, but cannot get a picture to come out right.  I think I need a new camera.  I have finally gotten the color close, but now I have these weird lines on the front.  I have tried taking the picture at a slight angle, putting up lights at an angle from the side, from the top, from the bottom...  I almost had it and then I could see the lines from the canvas.  So, I may have to enlist a friend for photos.

In addition to working on my painting, I have joined the Florida Etsy Street team.  I got caught up in looking at all the wonderful creations from this group of very talented artisans.  Thanks for including me.  Maybe I'll get inspired!!   Let's see what comes up next!

The next step

Painting is finished on this purse.  Now I have to put sealer on it, attach hinges, clasp, strap hanger and leather strap.  Then I have to let my customer know she can pick up her new purse!!!

Today's Project

This is the project I am working on today for a client.  This will become a gourd purse with a white clematis on it and will look similar to the image in my profile.  I'll post more pictures as I get farther along.

After the Show

I had a wonderful time attending the Boynton Woman's Club show and luncheon.  The women were really nice and easy to work with.  When they introduced the judges I was very definitely the lowest person on the totem pole.  The women really liked my purse since they passed it around while I was doing judging and I have a sale already.  The other judges have all studied in prestigious places and been given awards.  One of the photographers has had two pictures considered for Pulliter Prizes.  Thankfully, he was really nice and down to earth.  Well, I am off to start getting some new items ready to add to my website, as well as for the upcoming Delray Affair in April.  Pictures will be forthcoming, hopefully tomorrow.

By the way, check out my sites : www.cvdesignsfl.etsy.com, and cvdesignsfl.com.

Make it a great day and do something creative!

Off to Judge

I am heading to the Boynton Women's Club in Boynton Beach, FL to judge their arts and crafts show today.  I am a little nervous since I have never done this before and don't really know what to expect.  I think it will be a lot of fun and hope that I don't embarrass myself.  Luckily, I have done a lot of reading, as well as checking out other booths when I go to my own shows and have an idea what goes into most areas to have a finished product.  Wish me luck!!!

Initial Thoughts

Thank you for coming to my blog. I am new to this and will get better as I go along. For now, I am an artist that mainly works with gourds and acrylics. I have recently finished the picture at left. I think it came out fairly well. I am not really used to working on a canvas and so will have to work on my backgrounds. It is different working on a flat surface as opposed to the round shape of a gourd. Each surface has some kind of quirk that has to be worked through.
